API is an abbreviation for Application-Programming Interface. It is a technology that connects two systems and allows them to communicate with one another. In general, APIs are divided into two types: push and pull. For example, if a company uses one HRMS solution for HR and payroll but another accounting system, the API sends financial data between programs. It is a standard approach for integrating with a third-party system.
